Can We Revive the Village Festival?

This page was last updated on Monday, July 19, 2010

Newly elected City Councillor for Kings Worthy Jane Rutter writes:

As part of my election campaign in May I suggested that we should bring back the Village Festival which was run for several years under the leadership of Eleanor Hamblin and under the ‘umbrella’ of the church.

This was a very popular idea.

I would like to start a new Worthys Festival which brings together the communities of Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy and Abbots Worthy, with the churches (St Mary’s and St Swithun’s), Parish Councils, village pubs and as many village and community based organisations and groups as would like to become involved.

I would like to see a Steering Group to coordinate activities, with representatives of the main organisations who are taking part, but the idea would be that each group that took a part in the Festival should organise their own ‘bits’.

So, for instance, within the Festival we could have a Music Festival based at St Mary’s, and whatever that entailed would be organised by church members with their Director of Music.  We could have a mini football tournament as part of the Festival, in turn organised by Worthys FC, and so on.

To get the ball rolling, I have organised an initial meeting for:

TUESDAY 27 July at 6.30pm
In the Church Rooms, behind St Mary’s Church, London Road.

Anybody who is interested in getting involved with the Worthys Festival is welcome to come along.  The first new Festival could be as soon as September 2011.

Please contact me if you have any comments or would like to get involved but can’t make the meeting.
Jane Rutter
City Councillor, Kings Worthy Ward.
