Nearly a 100 people, including Headbourne Worthy Parish Councillor Jane Rutter, attended the recent public meeting at Newburgh House, Winchester.
At which Network Rail and its Contractor Carillion outlined their proposals for the work shortly to be undertaken at Andover Road Overbridge, Winchester.
The bridge will be rebuilt at a cost of £3.1m as part of the major Southampton – Nuneaton Freight Enhancement Project, to allow the new generation of larger freight containers to be used on the rail route.
Work is due to start on 1 February, whilst motorists will not be able to use the bridge for 3 months from 12 April to 12 July, although a temporary footbridge for cyclists and local residents to cross will be provided.
A heated meeting heard that the work will result in disruption to rail services and major diversions for Winchester traffic.
The intended traffic diversions were seen by those attending the meeting as being both dangerous and not practical.
As part of the same upgrade project, work on the Stoke Charity Road Overbridge, Kings Worthy will commence on 18 February with a partial road closure from 6 April to 30 July 2010.
A separate public meeting has been arranged for 2 February at the St Mary’s Church Hall, Fraser Road, Kings Worthy so that local residents affected by this particular work can hear what will be involved.
