Over 50 people gathered on Church Green, Kings Worthy to witness the unveiling of part of Kings Worthy’s unusual industrial manufacturing heritage.

It was an historic hydraulic water ram which had been manufactured at the once nearby Vulcan Iron Works early in the 20th Century.

The ram, mounted on a plinth, makes an interesting addition to the landscape work that has been undertaken by Kings Worthy Parish Council to improve Church Green.

Council Chairman, Cllr. Peter Warrener, introduced the proceedings and Derek Brockway, project leader, explained the background to the 3 year quest to find a suitable ram for display.

He was very heartened by the way local businesses and organisations had volunteered to help with the challenging project.

The unveiling was undertaken by Charles Doble, Managing Director of Green and Carter Ltd whose company makes hydraulic rams and moved from the Worthys site to Somerset in 1982.

A leaflet explaining how rams work and their connection with Kings Worthy was circulated and is available as a PDF. More photographs and history on this heavy industrial enterprise will be available shortly.
