Scrub Clearance and Maintenance of Footpath 502 at Kings Worthy, Disused Railway

On Sunday 18 January the first afternoon of fair weather in the New Year, 15 volunteers met near the veterinary surgery on Hookpit Farm Lane, fully togged out to cope with whatever the weather might throw at them.

The footpath running along the disused Didcot-Southampton railway (DNSR) has in recent years been steadily improved by the group.

This has included creating several glades, installing ‘sleeper’ style oak benches, erecting nest boxes on trees, and general maintenance such as litter picking.

The results have offered greatly enhanced views, improved displays of wild-flowers in the summer months, new habitats, and rest areas for weary walkers.

Split into 4 teams each equipped with bow-saws, loppers and mattocks and the like.

The teams spread out along the stretch of the railway path, their task was to revisit these sites, to ensure the improvements were properly maintained – and that nature had not started to retake the areas previously cleared.

At the end of the afternoon’s excellent work it had all been accomplished in good weather.

The clearings are now set for another, hopefully warm, summer and the enjoyment which these undoubtedly beautiful settings afford walkers and other visitors during the balmier months of the year.

Later in the spring it is intended to scatter some extra wildflower seed to give an even brighter look to the areas cleared.
