Landscape Work to Church Green, London Road Completed

Following extensive consultations, within the village and particularly with the residents of Church Green Close culminating in many ideas, plus a public exhibition, the long awaited landscape work at Church Green has recently been completed.

This area of land formally known as Peek’s Field was gifted to the Parish Council, as part of the Section 106 Agreement with the housing developer for the provision of public open space for the residents of Kings Worthy and Abbots Worthy.

Although some landscaping work was undertaken by the developer, the Parish Council were keen to improve the area still further.

The vast majority of villagers were in
agreement that the forbidding conifer hedge
on London Road should be removed as the
initial priority to open the views across to
St Mary’s Church.

This was undertaken in the autumn of 2008.

The spring of 2009 saw the landscape work commence in earnest.

Along the boundary of the churchyard and London Road new metal estate type railings have been provided matching those outside of the Jubilee Hall.

New wooden seating and litter boxes have been placed strategically around the green together with extensive shrub and tree planting and a wild flower area on the churchyard boundary complete the transformation of this village green oasis.

At one recent weekend families were seen playing cricket, together with others enjoying picnics and flying kites, just as was envisaged at the initial concept for the scheme many months ago.

The project was designed by Chartered Landscape Architects TGD Landscapes Ltd., Chandlers Ford, and undertaken by landscape specialists Holmes & Sons, Littleton on behalf of Kings Worthy Parish Council.

Your parish councillors trust that all villagers will enjoy the improvements to the area which have been funded from Winchester City Council’s Open Space Fund.
