Thanks to the sterling efforts of County Councillor Jackie Porter, considerable work has been done by Hampshire CC and their contractor Amey on the culverts crossing Springvale Road and Bedfield Lane.

Jackie has liaised with the many organisations that have responsibility for the different work elements involved.

These include Hampshire CC (ditches), Winchester CC (verges) and the Environment Agency (watercourses), who all met on site on 15 August with Cllr Porter and Cllr D Spurling HWPC to agree the work required.

A start on the work required was implemented, whilst early in November HCC commenced work to clear the twin storm water culvert from Down Farm Lane across Springvale Road to the ditch between the fences by Worthy Barn.

The photo shows pressure jetting of these culverts being undertaken by HCC contractors.

The ditch in Down Farm Lane leading to the storm culverts will be cleared and a grill put in place to prevent more rubbish flowing through.

The ditch between the two fences by Worthy Barn by the watercress beds towards the river will also be cleared.

Finally when this work is completed the Environment Agency will clear and regrade the river so that it does not silt up so easily in future.

Regular cutting of the grass sides of ditches along Bedfield Lane as well as the verges will be undertaken by Winchester City Council.

All of this work will ensure that the flooding which has been a real concern for local residents at this location, especially after heavy rain should be greatly reduced.
