Know Your Parish Councillors

Kings Worthy Parish Council consists of twelve councillors, who stand for four years, after which new elections are held and overseen by Winchester City Council. The last elections for Kings Worthy were in May 2010. In addition to the twelve councillors the role of Parish Clerk is shared. All parish councillors are required to abide by the Standards Board of England, Model Code of Conduct 2007. Local residents are able to contact the Parish Council with concerns or ideas through the Parish Clerk.
 

Councillor Kirstie Andrew-PowerCouncillor Kirstie Andrew-Power

Kirstie was elected to the parish council in May 2010 and is a member of the Planning Committee.


She moved to Kings Worthy from London five years ago, with her husband and two children.  The whole family play an active part in village life and are all passionate about the parish and its community.   
Kirstie was a secondary school leader before joining an educational trust in 2006.


She and her family enjoy the outdoors and a wide range of sports.  To celebrate a recent significant birthday, Kirstie ran the London Marathon and completed the 26.2 mile Moonwalk.  With the support of friends and family these efforts raised over £4k for local charities and £1k for breast cancer charities.

 
Councillor Robert BarnesCouncillor Robert Barnes

Bob was elected to the Parish Council in May 2010 and has lived in Winchester most of his life, but only moved to Kings Worthy 18 months ago. He spent over 30 years of his career in the transport industry, buses, taxis and coaches, until his recent retirement at 65. At present he works on a part time basis, with HCC as a bus surveyor.

 

His interests include cooking, F1 motor racing and he is an armchair supporter of Portsmouth FC. He lives with his wife of 19 years Joanna, who is warehouse supervisor for the Naomi House charity in Winnall, they have no children. Bob says that he and Joanna both fell in love with Kings Worthy as soon as they moved in.

 

He is a member of both the Finance and Planning Committees; Bob says ‘as a Parish Councillor he hopes he can be a voice for the people of Kings Worthy.’

 

Councillor Terry BohleCouncillor Terry Bohle

Terry was elected to the Parish Council in 2010 and is a member of both the Finance and Recreation & Amenities Committees.

 

Terry is an ex-Londoner who has lived in a number of places since attaining Qualified Teacher Status, getting married to a Spaniard and having two children. He worked in education as a Lecturer in various Colleges of Further and Higher Education, as well as Surrey University, which in most cases meant moving house.

 

Three of the moves were overseas - Antigua, Egypt and Spain – the latter being when he took early retirement from Guildford College in 1994. He moved back to the UK in 1998 and settled with his wife in St Cross, Winchester. He then worked part-time in various schools and colleges until retiring from Peter Symonds College in 2003.

 

After ten years in St Cross, he and his wife decided that they would prefer to live in a new-build property, so in 2007 they bought a flat in Court Road, their thirteenth move!

 
Councillor Ian GordonCouncillor Ian Gordon
Ian joined the Parish Council in early 2008. He has lived with his family, in the village since 1979,   having moved from Leatherhead to work for Winchester City Council as an environmental food technician. Having worked for local government for 27 years he then spent time with Southern Tourist Board as a regional inspector until 2001. Currently he is a Quality Assurance Assessor on behalf of Visit Britain.


Ian’s interests are gardening and showing dogs with his wife and he has been a Crufts Steward for a number of years. Apart from his work at Crufts, for some 15 years now he has been secretary of the Itchen Valley Training Society, a dog training club, which has operated in the Jubilee Hall for over 50 years. He is also a member of the Jubilee Hall Management Committee.

 

In past years Ian was the vice-chairman of Winchester Carnival Committee.

 

Councillor Amanda ReadCouncillor Amanda Hallisey

Amanda was elected to the parish council in May 2010. She is a member of the Recreation and Amenities Committee and outside of the parish council she is also a member of the Kings Worthy Festival Committee.

 

Amanda says she joined the parish council to be involved in local affairs.

 

She was born in Winchester and is married with two sons. She and her family have lived in Kings Worthy for 8 years after moving from Winchester city centre.

 

Amanda is a dog trainer with links to the South Wonston Dog Training Club and does occasional training sessions for a local vet.

 

Councillor Malcolm PrinceCouncillor Malcolm Prince (Vice Chairman)
Malcolm joined the Parish Council in May 2010, following early retirement from the City.  He is married to Jill, with two children both now at University, moved to Kings Worthy in 2001 following periods in Jersey, Sheffield, Loughborough University and his home city of Hull.

During his career Malcolm has been actively involved in business strategy, investments and marketing working for a leading world financial organisation.  In 2009 he was particularly pleased to direct a project together with the British Government and World Bank which raised £244m for the vaccination of children in third world countries.

 

Over the years Malcolm and his family have been active in the local community.  Recently this has included the village fete and being Chairman/Treasurer of the Worthies Scouts Group.  In his younger days Malcolm represented Great Britain at athletics, whilst now he enjoys fell walking.


Malcolm is Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Recreation & Amenities Committee. He is also a member of the team drawing together the Village Plan.

 

Councillor Rosemary SignCouncillor Rosemary Sign
Rosemary is Vice - Chairman of the Recreation and Amenities Committee.

 

She is the third generation of her family to have lived in Kings Worthy and has been a parish councillor for several years. She has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the village and is the first person the other councillors go to for any information about Kings Worthy. 

 

Rosemary has many interests and is involved in a great deal of voluntary work in addition to her work on the Parish Council.

 

Councillor Judith Steventon Baker Councillor Judith Steventon Baker 

Judith was elected to the Parish Council in May 2010 and is a recent resident of Kings Worthy, having moved there about three years ago. Originally from Devon she came to Winchester 20 years ago in pursuit of work. She is a tenant of Winchester City Council and an active member of TACT, (Tenant And Council Together) which is the Winchester City Council district-wide tenant and leaseholders forum and support group, with tenants and Council working together. Judith is one of the two Vice Chairs. 

 

She has now been retired almost two years and when time allows enjoys working on her garden.  She has two sons, one just retired from active service with the Signals Regiment and the other a Prison Officer, and a daughter who lives and works in Chicago. She has four grand children and a great grand daughter with whom she loves to spend as much time as she can, both in the States and Devon where they now live.

 

Judith is a member of both Planning and Recreation & Amenities Committees.

 

Councillor Denis WelsteadCouncillor Denis Welstead
Denis is a member of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers and a retired Civil Servant having worked for the Health & Safety Executive for most of his career, holding posts in various parts of the country. His final position was Senior Principal Inspector in Edinburgh with UK responsibilities. 

 

Among his duties was chairing national committees on agricultural chemicals, British Standards and leading delegations to European and International meetings. He retired in 1997.

 

In 2005 Denis and his wife Anne moved to Kings Worthy. They have two sons and four grandchildren. He is a member of St Mary’s Parochial Church Council, a sick person visitor and co-ordinator of the ‘Mystery of Christmas’ event.

 

Denis is also Co-ordinator of Kings Worthy Action on Climate Change, and Immediate Past President of Winchester Rotary.

Councillor Sarah White ChairmanCouncillor Sarah White (Chairman)
Sarah joined the Parish Council in early 2008 having moved to Hampshire and Kings Worthy in the autumn of 2006 for her husband’s work as a medico-legal solicitor.
 
She was born and brought up in Warwickshire, moved to Sheffield for University, then stayed there for over 20 years, training as a doctor and then working as a General Practitioner. Married with a young son, she was a school governor back in Sheffield.

 

The family have quickly made new roots down here, being actively involved with Kings Worthy Primary School and the Worthys Youth Football Club. Sarah currently does General Practice locum work in a number of local practices, and is keen to be involved in the local community and help contribute to the life of the village.

 

Sarah is a member of the Finance and Recreation & Amenities Committees. Also editor of Village News and has been co-opted as the Council’s representative on the Kings Worthy Primary School Governing Board.
